I wanted to post this story that is on CNN for all of you. It raises a VERY valid point: Just who IS diagnosing all of these children with ADHD<\/a><\/em>\u00a0or ADD?<\/p>\n

When my son was in second grade, I was told by a teacher that it was \u2018necessary\u2019 that he go into special\u00a0ed<\/a>\u00a0classes \u2013 which really meant \u201cI don\u2019t want to deal with him or do my job and since I\u2019m lazy, we\u2019re going to label your son for life.\u201d<\/p>\n

If your child has been diagnosed with\u00a0ADHD, please get the proper testing done and get a second opinion. Teachers and doctors are not all-knowing gods. They are valuable and highly trained human beings who are nonetheless capable of mistakes and personal agendas.<\/p>\n

(CNN)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 As a toddler, Ian Barrier got expelled from day care.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just said that he was all over the place, he couldn\u2019t handle the structure, they didn\u2019t have the staff or the skills to deal with it,\u201d said his mother, Amy Barr. \u201cThey said, \u2018We think he has ADD or ADHD\u2019 and I\u2019m like, \u2018What is that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Ian, now 11, and his 9-year-old brother Aidan are just two examples of some 5 million children in the United States who have received the diagnosis of\u00a0attention deficit hyperactivity disorder<\/a>\u00a0(ADHD), a condition marked by impulsive behavior and a lack of focus.<\/p>\n

But although this is a medical condition with medical treatments available, often doctors aren\u2019t the ones suggesting a diagnosis.<\/p>\n

Many parents begin their struggles with treating their children\u2019s ADHD the way that Barr did: with a suggested diagnosis from a school or day care setting. That\u2019s a problem, doctors say, when there could be many other factors contributing to a child\u2019s behavior.<\/p>\n

For a teacher to suggest that a child has ADHD is \u201cinappropriate and dangerous,\u201d says Dr. Elizabeth Roberts, child psychiatrist in Murrieta, California.\u00a0Depression<\/a>, anxiety and abuse are all possibilities in a child\u2019s life that could lead to attention problems, Roberts said. That means that many children are receiving medication for the wrong problem.<\/p>\n

Roberts wants to say to all educators: \u201cThere are many, many diagnoses that cause these problems, including abuse and\u00a0depression<\/a>\u00a0and anxiety. So please, withhold your judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n
